A 28-year old electrician, Awal Mohammed, has been jailed 2 years for forging the Volta River Authority/ Northern Electrification Distribution Company (VRA/NEDCO) letter.
The criminal act by the resident of Amanten in the Brong Ahafo region enabled him to supply electricity and meter to one Alhassan Yakubu, a resident at Amanten.
He pleaded guilty to a charge of forging a document and was sentenced on his own plea.
Before passing sentence, Mrs Lydia Osei Marfo, Nsuta Circuit judge, advised staff of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure proper security of their valued books especially receipts and forms to avoid unscrupulous people access to such documents to defraud the public.
Chief Inspector, Daniel Gbedzinu prosecuting told the court that the complainant in the case is a Technician Engineer at the VRA/NEDCO office at Ejura in the Ashanti region while the accused is an electrician at Amanten.
He said on July 17, 2017 at about 1. 45 pm, one Alhassan Yakubu presented a letter to the VRA/NEDC office at Ejura requesting the supply of electricity and meter to his house at Amanten.
The prosecutor said after carefully looking at the letter, the complainant detected that it was a forged one and when Alhassan was questioned, he mentioned the accused name as the one who gave him the letter.
He said a complaint was made to the police and in his caution statement, the accused admitted committing the offence explaining that he has on many occasions assisted the VRA/NEDCO staff to render services to the homes of residents at Amanten and its environs and he laid hands on a letter to a customer of the company and out of it, he prepared one to Alhassan Yakubu.
The prosecutor said after police investigation, the accused was charged with the offence and arranged before court.
