File photo: Woman crying

A nursing mother [name withheld] who has been detained over client protection reasons at Tema General Hospital (TGH) was in tears when help finally came her way last Thursday.

For the mother, believed to be in her 30s, motherhood comes with joy but hers was short-lived last month after birth.

“We noticed the baby wasn’t crying after birth. Doctors told me babies who didn’t cry at birth could end up having health conditions. After several diagnoses, they tried saving the baby at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), but the baby could not survive,” she narrated with tears.

According to her, she began experiencing pain around her abdomen but was later discharged when the pain subsided.

Her condition, however, started deteriorating at home and she had to revisit the hospital a week later.

After scanning her, doctors at Tema General Hospital noticed her womb was filled with some fluid.

“Had it not been the love and special care I received from midwives, I don’t think I would be here narrating this to you. The results indicated that I had infection in my womb and it was also filled with some fluid, a situation doctors and nurses here found strange,” she said.

She ended up at the theatre as it was the only means by which doctors could save her.

“They then prepared me for the theatre. I remember being brought to the post-delivery ward on Sunday and I have felt better since,” she smiled in the midst of tears.

The main challenge throughout her emotional journey has been finances.

With no family member around, her sister at Tarkwa is also not making enough to be able take care of her and her only source of hope came from nurses at the facility.

Narrating this to Adom News, she was shocked when the Abigail Hama Ministry handed over an undisclosed amount of money to settle her medical bills.

Leader of the group, Abigail Hama who was once in a similar condition said God has placed upon her heart to help nursing mothers who needed financial assistance.

“From my experience, I can tell you that it is not easy to give birth and not have anyone supporting you. Luckily for me, my husband, Apostle Hama, has been extremely supportive,” she said.

According to Abigail Hama, she puts together whatever she makes from her burgeoning song ministry and in turn hand over to nursing mothers in need at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at Tema General Hospital, Gifty Bondzi is grateful for the gesture.

“We can only ask for God’s blessing for Madam Abigail and her group. We appreciate this a lot because we have several of such cases here as some mothers who owe the facility end up escaping and leaving their newborn babies behind,” she revealed.
