The design for the new proposed Parliament Chamber

A group, identified as the Economic Fighters, stormed Parliament Friday, to protest against the proposed construction of a new Parliament Chamber that would cost $200 million.

According to one Rasheed Adams, one of the organisers of the ongoing #DropthatChamber Campaign, Friday’s protest was to announce their planned demonstration on July 13, 2019 against the project.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, monitored by Adomonline, Mr Adams said their decision to protest followed the unsatisfactory responses from Parliament regarding the project.

“We have not heard anything satisfying enough to say we are not going to continue with the protest. We are not backing down if Parliament is not backing down on plans for the project,” Mr Adams noted.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu on Thursday at a press conference gave the assurance that the interest of the public would be considered in the final determination of the project.

“The process is not concluded and the financials have not been concluded, procurement has not been concluded. The agreement has not been firmed up because these ones have not been completed. If the agreement is firmed up, it must come to Parliament for approval,” he assured.
