Dede Ayew, Black Stars captain

Black Stars captain, Andre Dede Ayew has admitted that the Black Stars were under pressure during the group games at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, the former West Ham United winger says though Ghanaians are unhappy with their performance, they know exactly what they are doing.

He said the team knows what it is doing “progressing and improving game by game.”

The four-time champions began their campaign on a slow note after back-to-back draw with Benin and Cameroon in their opening two games.

But, on Tuesday Ghana recorded a 2-0 win against Guinea-Bissau which secured them a place in the knockout stage of the competition.

The result saw Ghana top Group F on goal difference ahead of Cameroon who drew 0-0 with Benin.

Speaking to Multimedia’s reporter, Benedict Owusu Dankwa after the game, Andre lauded the team’s performance.

“Our people [Ghanaians] were very stressed in Ghana but we were calm, we knew what we were doing. We are progressing and improving game by game. Hopefully the next game we will even be better and we can qualify,” he assured.

“I want to congratulate all the boys. They were under a lot of pressure after the first two games; it’s not everybody that can withstand this sort of pressure from the media and fans,” he added.

Ghana will face Tunisia in the round of 16 on Monday July 8, 2019.
