Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has backed Carlos Queiroz to remain as Black Stars coach despite the team’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Ghana, four-time African champions, are yet to earn a point after losing their opening two Group C matches.

The Black Stars began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast before suffering a 4-2 loss to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, despite taking a two-goal lead.

The results have intensified pressure on Queiroz, who was retained after guiding Ghana to qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup, their first appearance in that phase since 2010.

Calls for the Portuguese coach to be dismissed have grown following the disappointing start to the AFCON qualifiers.

However, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe believes Queiroz should be given more time to turn the team’s fortunes around.

“With the present coach, I will say he should be just left alone. Absolutely, he should remain. What we saw yesterday [against Gambia] was not his fault; he is a good stopgap coach, and he showed it when he took us to the World Cup,” the Hearts of Oak board member told Citi FM.

“Such a coach, you don’t throw him away. If we did that, looking for another coach will not be easy; another coach who can bring these boys up will not be easy, I can assure you. Nobody should sack him, or nobody should put pressure on him,” Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe added.

Ghana will return to action in November when they face Somalia in back-to-back Group C qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars need a significant turnaround in their remaining matches to revive their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 tournament.
