The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) have begun discussions on a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and improving the quality and regulation of medical services in Ghana.

The engagement, held at the Secretariat of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund in Accra, focused on areas where the two institutions could leverage their respective mandates and expertise to improve healthcare infrastructure, equipment management, facility monitoring and institutional capacity.

Registrar of HeFRA, Dr. Winfred Korletey Baah, who led the agency’s delegation, described the Ghana Medical Trust Fund as a “game changer,” saying its interventions were not only transforming healthcare delivery but also making the work of health facility regulators easier.

He said the impact of GMTF went beyond the provision of equipment and infrastructure, stressing the importance of ensuring that healthcare facilities had the capacity to respond effectively to patients’ needs.

Dr. Baah said HeFRA was prepared to provide regulatory and technical support to GMTF, particularly in the assessment and monitoring of healthcare facilities and medical equipment supported through the Fund’s interventions.

HeFRA also identified infrastructure, vehicles and information technology equipment, including computers, as some of the areas where it required support to strengthen its regulatory operations.

According to Dr. Baah, closer collaboration between the two institutions could help ensure that medical equipment procured or donated through GMTF interventions was properly installed, maintained and utilised to deliver the intended benefits to patients.

He said such collaboration would also help strengthen accountability and ensure that investments in healthcare translated into improved patient outcomes.

The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, said the engagement formed part of the Fund’s broader efforts to build strategic partnerships with key institutions within the health sector as it marked its first anniversary.

She said partnerships with institutions such as HeFRA were important to ensuring that investments in healthcare infrastructure, equipment and services were effectively utilised and sustained.

The discussions underscored the need for stronger collaboration among health-sector institutions to ensure that investments in the health system translate into tangible improvements in patient care.

The proposed partnership is expected to provide opportunities for HeFRA and GMTF to complement each other’s efforts and contribute to a stronger, more efficient and better-regulated healthcare system.
