New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has described his appointment as a “mission” rather than a routine managerial role, expressing deep gratitude, humility and determination as he begins his tenure in charge of Ghana’s national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced Portuguese tactician has been handed a short-term deal by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), taking over from Otto Addo, who was dismissed following consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window.
In his first public message to Ghanaian supporters, Queiroz outlined his commitment to restoring pride in the Black Stars, insisting he is ready to dedicate his experience to the service of the team and the nation.
“Football has given me a lifetime of challenges, lessons, and unforgettable journeys all over the world,” he wrote. “I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career. Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul.”
He added that the role carried a responsibility beyond results, stressing unity, discipline and ambition as key pillars of his project.
“This is not just another job — it is a mission,” he said. “And I am ready to give everything of my experience and knowledge once again, in service of the game and the happiness of people.”
Queiroz is expected to meet his squad next month as Ghana step up preparations with international friendlies against Mexico and Wales on June 2.
The Black Stars head into the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before tough encounters with England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
With the nation still searching for a return to consistent World Cup success after disappointing campaigns in 2014 and 2022, Queiroz arrives under pressure to transform promise into performance on football’s biggest stage.
