Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has begun reaching out to his co-candidates from the party’s presidential primaries, including Kennedy Agyapong, in a bid to strengthen unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The development was revealed by Akuapem North MP, Sammi Awuku, in an interview on Accra-based Peace FM.
According to him, the move forms part of a broader effort to heal divisions that may have emerged after what he described as a fiercely contested primary.
“The contest was intense, and naturally, you need to bring everybody on board going into 2028. The focus now is unity. We need to consolidate and move forward as one party if we want to win 2028,” he stressed.
Dr Bawumia, who was re-elected on January 31, 2026, to lead the party into the 2028 general elections, beat former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, Bosomtwe MP Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Abetifi MP Dr Bryan Acheampong.
Providing details of the engagements, Awuku disclosed that a key meeting has already taken place between Dr Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong.
“He has made a personal and private visit to his brother Kennedy Agyapong. They had extensive conversations on how the party can unite in the aftermath of the primaries ahead of 2028,” he said.
He described the outcome as positive and reassuring, emphasising that the initiative is crucial for the party’s future.
“He reported to us that he left the meeting very satisfied, with assurances that Kennedy Agyapong will support him. All the engagements so far have been very constructive, and the responses have been encouraging,” he added.
