Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has undergone a spiritual cleansing following his release from police custody.
The exercise comes after he spent about a week in connection with an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The spiritual exercise, which took place on Wednesday, is believed to form part of his return to normal life following his arrest and subsequent detention.
Ayitey Powers was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on August 24, 2026, after reporting himself to the police following an invitation over a viral social media video.
He was subsequently arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court, where he was charged with threat of death and remanded for one week.
He was scheduled to reappear on September 2 as investigations continued.
Ayitey Powers was, however, discharged by the court when he appeared on the scheduled date.
The arrest followed a call by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for the police to investigate and prosecute him over the alleged comments. The committee also initiated disciplinary proceedings against the former boxer.
The controversy stemmed from an ongoing disagreement between Ayitey Powers and authorities over the cancellation of a boxing event he was promoting and financial losses he claimed to have suffered as a result.
