Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded into police custody for one week by the Dansoman Circuit Court over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a day after his arrest by the Accra Regional Police Command in connection with a video circulating on social media.
He is expected to reappear before the court on September 2, 2026, as police continue investigations into the alleged threat.
The former boxer reportedly reported himself to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters after receiving an invitation to assist with investigations into the video, in which he was allegedly seen making threatening remarks against the NSA Director-General.
He was subsequently arrested, detained and processed for court following a call by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for his arrest and prosecution.
The GBIMC has described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and called for the matter to be properly investigated and dealt with by the appropriate authorities.
The committee has also commenced disciplinary proceedings against Ayitey Powers, potentially opening another front in the matter and raising questions about his standing within the boxing fraternity.
The development comes amid heightened attention to the conduct of personalities within Ghana’s boxing community, particularly over public statements and social media activities deemed threatening or damaging to the image of the sport.
Meanwhile, the police have urged the public to exercise restraint and refrain from circulating unverified information concerning the case as investigations continue.
Ayitey Powers will remain in police custody until his next court appearance on September 2, when police are expected to provide an update on the progress of their investigations.
