A former Central Regional Chairman for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Bernard Allottey Jacobs says his party is broke hence its reliance on aspirants to fund their congress.
“We would not have asked the aspirants to pay such an amount if the party had enough money to fund the elections,” he noted.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Tuesday, Mr Allotey explained that the party needs money to be able to organise the presidential primaries and its campaign ahead of the 2020 elections.
“We don’t have money and we believe this amount can help mobilise every party member to go and vote during the presidential primaries,” he noted
“I believe the ability of the party to raise internal funds depicts members now have the power to decide who becomes the flagbearer,” he added.
Mr Allottey emphasised this is nothing ‘new’ because times have changed, the party also needs to change.
“I know the aspirants are capable of paying the money so they should pay. We are not joking with our democracy but enhancing it because democracy is expensive and we don’t want the 2016 apathy to set in again,” he added.
