The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene has directed the Ahafo Ano Southwest district to immediately halt the construction of its 24-hour economy market project and all related activities.
The order follows a video circulating on social media in which a Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the district alleged a school facility was at risk of being demolished to pave the way for the market project.
Responding to the concerns in a Facebook post, Dr. Amoakohene noted that there are no plans to demolish the classroom block as part of the construction of the 24-hour model market.
“I wish to assure the general public that the school has not been demolished and will not be demolished,” the Minister wrote on Facebook.
He also noted that the district assembly has been ordered to immediately halt all related activities, summoning all relevant stakeholders to his office for a full review of the matter.
The District Chief Executive of Ahafo Ano Southwest, Abubakar Sedik, in a press statement also described the claims as “false, misleading and politically motivated”.
He stressed that the market project is separate from the classroom facility and that the two projects are not connected.
The DCE further explained that the classroom block in question was constructed in 2022 but has remained unused since its completion.
He described the construction of the facility at the time as a “misplaced priority,” citing the pressing developmental needs of residents and the fact that the building has not been utilised.
The Assembly, however, emphasised that the school has become an integral part of the community and continues to serve an important role in the lives of residents.
Mr. Sedik reassured residents and the general public that there are no plans to collapse the school, reaffirming his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote development and improve the living conditions of residents in the Ahafo Ano South West District.
The Assembly therefore assured the public that the school will remain in place, while efforts are made to address any concerns surrounding its operations and future.
