Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has opened up on the disappointment within the national team after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

It marked the country’s first absence from the continental showpiece in more than two decades, following a disappointing qualifying campaign that saw Ghana finish bottom of Group F with just three points from six matches, recording three defeats and three draws.

Speaking in an interview with FIFA, Semenyo acknowledged the pain of the early exit but insisted the team has since shifted focus and responded positively by securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“We were so frustrated that we didn’t qualify. It was very, very tough. But I feel like we’ve rectified that in terms of qualifying for the World Cup,” the 26-year-old said.

The 26-year-old forward stressed that Ghana’s ambitions now extend beyond mere participation at the global tournament, set to be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“But, we’re not just coming to the World Cup; we want to compete on all levels. I feel like everyone in the team is ready to go,” he added.

Semenyo further expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to challenge top opposition, calling for consistency and enjoyment on the pitch.

“For us, we can compete with these teams. It’s just [about] winning games, having fun and showing the nation what we can do,” he added.

Despite the AFCON setback, Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup offered a timely boost, with the Black Stars drawn in Group L alongside England, Mexico and Panama.
