Residents of Akwaduro, a farming community in the Ahafo Region, are calling on the government to urgently address what they describe as a dangerous drainage problem on their road, warning that a major disaster is inevitable if nothing is done.
The appeal comes after an Adom News engagement with some staff of the Asunafo North Municipal Assembly, during which community members expressed deep concern over recurring floods that have made life increasingly difficult for residents.
Speaking to Adom News, the Queen Mother of the community, Nana Yaa Amoakoa, revealed that the contractor assigned by the government to construct their road only built drainage on one side, leaving the other side completely unattended.
According to her, the neglected side of the road is precisely where the majority of the community’s residents have settled. Due to the sloping nature of the terrain, she explained, every rainfall sends water rushing through the community, causing widespread flooding.
Beyond the flooding, Nana Yaa Amoakoa noted that the situation has given rise to severe erosion across the community, which she said poses a serious danger to all residents, particularly children.
She stressed that the community can no longer afford to wait, urging the government to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves before lives are lost.
Akwaduro is primarily a farming community, and residents say the repeated flooding is not only a threat to their safety but also to their livelihoods, as farmlands and property continue to suffer damage with each downpour.
The Asunafo North Municipal Assembly is yet to officially respond to the concerns raised by the community.
