Veteran Ghanaian Highlife musician Akosua Agyapong has opened up about a defining moment at the start of her music career before her first major performance at the Arts Centre.

She recounted in an interview on Joy Prime how she was offered hard substances to boost her morale for her performance.

Akosua Agyapong recalled that her first major show at the Arts Centre attracted more than 1,000 people, making it one of the biggest moments of her early career.

However, just before she went on stage, she said the leader of the instrumental band allegedly offered members of the group a substance from a container, claiming it would help them perform better.

But as a singer who always believed in her talent and was determined to prove herself, Akosua said she politely declined when it was her turn.

“I told him that, listen, there was a curtain. I said, have you seen the woman sitting there? That’s my mum. I cannot disappoint her. Coming out to perform knowing I’ve had something in me. I didn’t accept it.”

On why she was so confident of ‘killing’ her performance, Akosua explained that she had previously performed before thousands of students and therefore did not need any substance to boost her confidence.

Reflecting on the experience, Akosua Agyapong urged young musicians, actors and other entertainers not to succumb to pressure from industry players who encourage them to rely on drugs, rituals or other practices to succeed.

She stressed that talent is a gift from God and encouraged young creatives to trust in their abilities, remain disciplined and allow God to guide their careers.
