Health workers and patients at Adjena health centre of the Asuogyaman district in the Eastern region continue to live dangerously due to snakes and scorpions attacks aside blackout.
The facility’s control room caught fire a month ago and workers have since not had access to electricity making healthcare delivery quite difficult.
Nurses who depend on torchlight to work are forced to close the facility at 4:00pm daily limiting services to emergency cases instead of running 24 hour service.
The situation according to some members of the community could be salvaged by a high capacity generator available at the facility but the battery is missing.
The power situation has also affected water supply to the health centre as their mechanized water systems depends on electricity.
Some patients in an interview with Adom News’ Kwame Yankah are appealing to relevant authorities to act.
Adjena health facility which is a referral centre serving other communities has developed structural defects with cracks all over.
Nurses’ quarters also need urgent attention as roofs leak.
“We are forced to stay awake anytime it rains. Our roofs leak badly. The situation is terrible,” a frustrated nurse said.
Nurses have been instructed not to use an incinerator meant to dispose of medical waste among other things because it has not been commissioned since it was built.
Assemblyman for Adjena East Electoral Area, Hayford Agbenyega says a pregnant woman nearly died a few days ago due to the power situation.
“We really have a situation on our hand and this involves human lives. The earlier the problem is resolved, the better. How can you allow snakes and scorpions to invade a facility?” he asked.
According to him, drivers refuse attending to emergency situations especially conveying patients to VRA hospital at Akosombo due to the distance and deplorable road.
Meanwhile, Asuogyaman District Chief Executive, Samuel Agyekum has assured that power would be restored as necessary measures are put in place.
“I understand what the nurses and patients are going through but we are taking steps to address their challenges, he said.
