Tonnes of cocoa beans have been left to rot in farms at Amenfi West in the Western Region due to poor road network.
The road network in the district have not seen any repair works for several years despite efforts to fix them and reduce the trouble farmers go through in getting their cocoa beans to the depot.
Member of Parliament for Amenfi West, Eric Afful told Adom News the district has been the leading producer of cocoa in the country for the past three years and yet they cannot boast of good roads.
A situation he described as a security threat if nothing is done about it to reduce the stress the Licensed Buying Companies and cocoa farmers go through on daily basis.
The MP has expressed his disappointment in the Chief Executive Officer of the COCOBOD, Joseph Aidoo for terminating a road contract that would have otherwise seen the road network constructed.
Meanwhile, Kyidomhene of Wasa Amuni in the Amenfi West District, Nana Kwapong also called on government to renew contract awarded to Asabia Construction Limited to resume work on the said which stretched from Prestea Mumumi to Prestea Nkwanta.
The Chief said that bad road has become a security threat to the community because vehicles are forced to slow down on it and armed robbers take advantage of that to attack them.
“Traveling on that road to the hospital is also life threatening because people end up getting worse or even dying before reaching the hospital,” he said.
Nana Kwapong says the construction company has not been able to resume work because Government has not given them the green light.
He is therefore appealing to government to give the road urgent attention.
Assemblyman of the area, Yakubu Dawda also said the situation is very frustrating for farmers and residents so government’s intervention is needed immediately.
