The President of the Automobile Dealers Union of Ghana, Eric Kweku Boateng, has urged the government to introduce an agency-based system as the sole means of importing vehicles into Ghana.
According to him, the move will help strengthen the implementation of the new guidelines on the importation of used vehicles, stolen cars and ensure greater regulation within the automobile industry.
Mr. Boateng made the call following the Ghana Standards Authority’s strict enforcement of new guidelines governing the importation of used vehicles, which took effect on October 1, 2026.
Speaking in an interview with Adom News, Mr. Boateng said it is the association’s desire for Ghana to adopt a system similar to those in the United States and Canada, where authorized dealerships and agencies play a major role in vehicle imports.
He explained that an agency-based system could help improve standards within the sector and ensure that vehicles imported into the country meet the required safety and quality requirements.
Mr. Boateng also believes the proposed system could help bring greater accountability to vehicle importation while protecting consumers from vehicles purchasing stolen vehicles and that which do not meet the required standards.
He therefore called on the government and relevant authorities to consider the proposal as part of broader efforts to streamline vehicle imports and strengthen Ghana’s automobile industry.
