Carlos Queiroz has stepped down as Ghana coach following a difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, Adomonline.com has been told.

The 73-year-old Portuguese coach decided to leave his position after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia in Group C.

Queiroz replaced Otto Addo in April on a short-term contract initially covering the 2026 World Cup, before agreeing to continue with the Black Stars for the AFCON qualifiers.

He guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since 2010, but the team struggled on their return to competitive action.

Ghana opened their AFCON qualifying campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast in Bouake before suffering another setback against The Gambia.

The Black Stars surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 at the Accra Sports Stadium, leaving them bottom of Group C after two matches.

A deep source has revealed that Queiroz apologised to the players after the defeat by The Gambia and accepted responsibility for the team’s results.

He subsequently informed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of his decision to step down.

Queiroz is expected to leave the Black Stars along with his backroom team, including his assistant coach, nutritionist, conditioning coach, goalkeeping coach, video analyst and kit manager.

His departure brings an end to a seven-match spell in charge of Ghana, during which he recorded one win, two draws and four defeats.

The GFA is now expected to appoint a new head coach before the Black Stars return to action in November for back-to-back AFCON qualifying matches against Somalia.

Ghana will need to revive their campaign after a difficult start to their bid to qualify for the 2027 tournament.
