Deputy Transport Minister Dorcas Affo-Toffey has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing a safer, more efficient and sustainable maritime sector to support Ghana’s economic growth.
She made the remarks during the commemoration of this year’s World Maritime Day at the head office of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) at Ridge in Accra.
The event brought together the Minister for Transport, the Director-General of the GMA, officials of the Ministry of Transport and other stakeholders to reflect on the maritime industry’s contribution to national development.
Madam Affo-Toffey stressed the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, regulatory bodies, industry players and other stakeholders to address challenges and maximise opportunities within the sector.
She noted that a resilient maritime industry depended on a collective commitment to safety, operational efficiency, innovation and environmental sustainability.
According to her, sustained cooperation would help Ghana harness its maritime resources and strengthen the sector’s contribution to the country’s economic transformation.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted the importance of improving maritime safety and security, strengthening regulatory frameworks and promoting environmentally responsible practices.
She said creating an enabling environment for investment and growth was essential to building a maritime industry capable of meeting the country’s development needs.
The commemoration provided an opportunity for participants to examine emerging trends, challenges and opportunities in the global maritime industry and consider how Ghana could respond to changes in the sector.
The Ghana Maritime Authority, which regulates the maritime industry, plays a central role in promoting safety, security, environmental protection and the advancement of Ghana’s maritime interests.
Madam Affo-Toffey, who is also the Member of Parliament for Jomoro in the Western Region, commended the GMA, the Ministry of Transport and other industry stakeholders for their continued efforts to develop the sector.
She reiterated that building a stronger maritime industry required sustained partnerships and a shared sense of responsibility among all stakeholders.
The event ended with a renewed call for collective efforts to ensure that Ghana’s maritime sector remains safe, efficient and sustainable while contributing to national economic development.
