Residents of Akyem Hemang in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region have taken to the streets to demand justice for 28-year-old Douglas Acheampong, who was allegedly shot and killed by military personnel during a clash at a local mining concession.
The residents are calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Acheampong’s death and want anyone found responsible to face justice.
The protest follows an incident on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when heavily armed men travelling in V8 Land Cruisers reportedly arrived at the mining concession and clashed with community members.
Speaking to the media after presenting a petition to the Fanteakwa South District Chief Executive, Marcy Krong, the Assemblyman for the area, Darko Richmond, alleged that Acheampong was shot from behind while fleeing the scene after security personnel reportedly fired warning shots into the crowd.
According to him, the residents are demanding an immediate investigation into the incident and are calling on authorities to ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable.
The residents say they want answers about the circumstances surrounding Acheampong’s death and are urging authorities to act swiftly.
As part of their efforts to seek redress, the residents submitted a petition to the Fanteakwa South District Assembly, formally calling for action and answers regarding the incident.
Receiving the petition, the Fanteakwa South District Chief Executive, Marcy Krong, assured the residents that their concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate quarters for the necessary action and justice.
The DCE also appealed to the residents to remain calm and patient as the matter is addressed through the appropriate channels.
