The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Manager for Asutifi South in the Ahafo Region, Joseph Sarkodie, says illegal charges imposed on NHIS subscribers by some accredited health facilities are discouraging residents from enrolling in the scheme.
According to him, some healthcare providers continue to demand unauthorised fees from NHIS members, making the scheme less attractive to potential subscribers.
Mr Sarkodie made the disclosure at Hwidiem during a performance review meeting.
He described the practice as a violation of the NHIS regulations and urged subscribers who are charged illegal fees to report such cases to the NHIA.
He encouraged affected subscribers to provide receipts or other evidence of payment to enable the Authority to investigate the complaints and take appropriate action against service providers found culpable.
Mr Sarkodie said addressing the practice was necessary to restore confidence in the scheme and encourage more residents to enrol.
Meanwhile, the NHIA Director for the Ahafo Region, George Mawuli, identified poor network connectivity in some communities as another challenge affecting NHIS registration.
He said residents in communities without reliable network service often struggle to complete the registration process when NHIA officials visit.
Mr Mawuli therefore urged residents in such areas to take advantage of registration exercises organised in nearby communities with network connectivity.
He encouraged them to travel to those locations whenever NHIA officers are available to ensure they are enrolled and can access the benefits of the scheme.
