The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has averted a potential fuel disaster at Osubetor, near Tinkong in the Eastern Region, after a fuel tanker carrying about 54,000 litres of petrol became immobilised on a bridge.
The MAN tanker reportedly developed a mechanical fault while on the Osubetor Bridge, prompting an immediate response from the GNFS and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).
Firefighters and police officers secured the area and assessed the tanker to prevent any potential danger, given the large quantity of highly inflammable fuel it was carrying.
The GNFS said no fuel leakage or contamination was detected, and there was no fire hazard at the scene. Firefighters, however, applied cooling measures as a precaution while the situation was brought under control.
No casualties were recorded in the incident.
In a separate incident in the Eastern Region, the GNFS also responded to a domestic fire at Mission Quarters in Larteh Akuapem.
The fire involved a single-room apartment, but residents had already managed to extinguish the blaze with water before firefighters arrived.
The crew assessed the scene, salvaged some belongings and secured the affected area. Clothes and a blanket were destroyed in the fire.
The cause of the fire and the estimated cost of damage remain undetermined.
