Athletic Bilbao captain Inaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football with Ghana.
The 32-year-old forward confirmed his decision on Friday, saying he felt the time had come to end his career with the Black Stars.
“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end,” Williams said in a statement posted on X.
“I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt.”
Williams switched his international allegiance from Spain to Ghana in 2022 and made his Black Stars debut in June that year.
He went on to make 28 appearances for Ghana, scoring twice.
The forward was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar and also featured at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
He was included in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup, making him part of Ghana’s campaign at the tournament.
Before changing allegiance, Williams made one senior appearance for Spain.
Reflecting on his time with Ghana, Williams said representing the country had given him a stronger connection to his heritage.
“Ghana has given me much more than football,” he said. “It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest.”
Williams thanked Ghana supporters and those who had been part of his international career, adding that he would continue to support the Black Stars.
“Ghana will always be a part of me,” he said. “I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am. Medaase. Always Ghana.”
His decision brings an end to a four-year international career with Ghana, during which he represented the country at two World Cups and an Africa Cup of Nations.
