President John Dramani Mahama will on Sunday, 14 September 2026, serve as Special Guest of Honour at a ceremony marking the formal handing over of the right-of-way clearance for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Roads and Highways in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Ejisu Kwaso in the Ashanti Region.
The ceremony follows the successful completion of the corridor-clearing exercise by GAF Engineers. The military completed the clearance of 175.6 kilometres right-of-way in just 19 weeks, a week ahead of the original 20-week schedule.
Working in collaboration with the Ministries of Defence, Finance, and Roads and Highways, GAF engineers tackled dense vegetation and challenging terrain along the proposed six-lane dual carriageway corridor that stretches through parts of the Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti regions.
Upon completion, GAF described the achievement as “delivering on mission ahead of schedule,” highlighting the engineering capability of its personnel and their growing role in supporting major national infrastructure projects.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a flagship project under the government’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme.
Once constructed, the modern six-lane highway is expected to reduce travel time between Ghana’s two largest cities from the current six hours to approximately two hours, ease congestion, improve road safety and boost economic activity along the corridor.
The formal handover of the cleared right-of-way on 14 September is seen as a key milestone that clears the path for the next phase of the project, including detailed design finalisation and the procurement of contractors for the main construction works.
