The Department of Community Development has launched the Green Communities Initiative at Godokpe in the Ho Central Municipality of the Volta Region to promote environmental sustainability and strengthen the economic resilience of local communities.
The initiative, organised under the theme “Building Resilient and Sustainable Communities Through Green Economy Development,” seeks to involve communities directly in environmental protection while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Speaking to Adom News, the National Director of the Department of Community Development, Stephen Blay, said Godokpe is the second community to host the initiative after its launch in Koforidua.
He explained that the community was selected because of its existing commitment to environmental conservation, particularly its tree-planting activities.
Mr Blay said the programme would focus on community-based tree planting, environmental education and sustainable livelihood development. It will also draw on the participation of traditional authorities, young people, local communities and decentralised governance structures.
He said the broader objective is to create climate-resilient and environmentally conscious communities while empowering residents economically.
According to him, one community in each district across Ghana will be selected to participate in the tree-planting component of the programme.
Mr Blay noted that communities across the country are increasingly experiencing the effects of climate change, including flooding, drought, soil erosion, declining agricultural productivity and loss of vegetation due to activities such as illegal logging and charcoal production.
He added that rural-urban migration and limited economic opportunities have further increased the vulnerability of some communities, making an integrated approach to environmental restoration and economic empowerment necessary.
The National Director urged residents of Godokpe to take ownership of the initiative and help protect the trees planted to ensure the programme achieves its long-term objectives.
He also disclosed that the department would continue to provide skills training and start-up support to young people as part of efforts to promote economic independence.
Speaking on behalf of the elders and people of Godokpe, Togbe William Ahotor expressed gratitude to the Department of Community Development for choosing the community for the launch.
He assured the department that the community would protect and nurture the trees planted under the initiative.
Togbe Ahotor, however, appealed for urgent attention to the poor condition of the road linking the community, saying it continues to create difficulties for residents.
He urged Mr Blay to engage the appropriate authorities to address the road challenge.
In response, Mr Blay assured the community that he would forward the concern to the relevant authorities for consideration and possible action.
