President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA) with immediate effect.
The decision is part of a wider directive by the President to dissolve the governing boards of several state-owned institutions.
Other institutions affected include Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), VALCO, Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited, Ghana Post Company Limited, the Road Maintenance Trust Fund, TDC Ghana Limited and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
In a letter dated 2nd September 2026, the President directed the affected institutions to take the necessary steps, in line with the applicable laws and governing instruments, to formally notify members of their outgoing boards.
The respective management teams will remain in charge of the day-to-day administration of the institutions until new boards are constituted.
However, management has been instructed not to undertake major policy, financial or contractual decisions that require board approval without prior authorisation from the appropriate authority.
The dissolved NSA board, which was constituted for the 2025–2029 period, was chaired by Dr Fred Awaah.
The board also included representatives of the security services, tertiary institutions, the National Paralympic Committee and the Ghana Olympic Committee, alongside distinguished sporting personalities and individuals with expertise in sports development.

The dissolution comes at a significant time for Ghanaian sport, with attention increasingly focused on the state of the country’s sporting infrastructure.
The condition of major facilities, particularly the Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Sports Stadium, has generated renewed public debate over the need for rehabilitation and improved maintenance.
The Accra Sports Stadium, in particular, has faced heightened scrutiny in recent weeks amid concerns about its suitability for hosting major sporting events.
The development also comes as the Black Stars prepare for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana are scheduled to face The Gambia on 27 September, with preparations for the fixture taking place against the backdrop of wider discussions about the management and development of the country’s sporting facilities.
The government is now expected to begin the process of reconstituting the NSA board, while the authority’s management continues to oversee its operations in the interim.
