Another batch of 49 Ghanaians has been evacuated from South Africa as the government intensifies efforts to protect citizens amid growing xenophobic tensions and anti-migrant sentiments.
Accra-based Citi News reported that the returnees arrived at the Accra International Airport on Friday, August 21, as part of the government’s ongoing evacuation exercise for Ghanaians affected by the situation.
The evacuations follow reports of attacks and heightened tensions involving foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, raising concerns about the safety of Ghanaians living and working there.
The latest exercise forms part of broader measures to assist Ghanaians who feel unsafe and wish to return home.
Government authorities are continuing to monitor developments and engage Ghana’s diplomatic representatives and relevant South African authorities on measures to protect Ghanaian nationals.
Ghanaians in affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety directives as efforts continue to safeguard their wellbeing.
