A Ghanaian evacuee from South Africa has died shortly after arriving at the Accra International Airport as part of the government’s ongoing evacuation exercise following recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Friday, August 14, 2026, said the man was pronounced dead at the airport’s Emergency Medical Reception at 6:55 p.m.
He was among 50 Ghanaians who arrived in the country at about 5:50 p.m. on an Air Tanzania flight from South Africa.
According to the Ministry, the deceased began experiencing health complications about 30 minutes before the flight landed in Accra.
A medical team stationed at the airport immediately attended to him upon arrival and attempted to stabilise his condition.
However, despite efforts to save his life, he was pronounced dead by doctors at 6:55 p.m.
The Ministry said it is taking steps to formally notify the deceased’s family of the incident.
His remains have since been deposited at the Police Hospital for an autopsy.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will provide further information after engaging with the bereaved family.
