Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has announced Ghana’s 25-player squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the team set to battle for continental honours in Morocco.
The Swedish tactician has opted for a combination of experienced campaigners and promising young talents as Ghana prepares for one of Africa’s biggest women’s football tournaments.
The squad includes three goalkeepers, with FK Apolonia shot-stopper Afia Amenyeku joined by Cynthia Konlan Fiindib of Samatex Ladies and Jonina Ladies goalkeeper Osman Huzeimah.
In defence, Björkegren has selected a strong backline featuring Abena Anoma Opoku, Alex Tay, Anasteshia Achiaa, Benedicte Simon, Comfort Yeboah, Josephine Bonsu, captain Portia Boakye and Susan Amaduah.
The midfield and attacking departments contain several familiar faces from the Black Queens setup. Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, Evelyn Badu, Grace Asantewaa, Princella Adubea, Jennifer Cudjoe, Princess Marfo, Stella Nyamekye, Alice Kusi, Linda Owusuansah, Wasima Mohammed and Sharon Sampson have all been included.
The attacking options are led by Abi Kim, Ajegipina Zakaria and experienced forward Doris Boaduwaa, who brings valuable international experience to the squad.
Ghana head into the tournament with renewed confidence after Björkegren guided the Black Queens to a bronze medal finish, as the team continues its rebuilding process ahead of a crucial period for women’s football.
The 2026 WAFCON will also serve as a qualification route for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, increasing the stakes for all participating nations.
The Black Queens have been drawn in Group D alongside Cameroon, Mali and Cape Verde, with the group stage scheduled to run from July 26 to August 6.
The quarter-finals will take place on August 8 and 9, while the semi-finals are set for August 12. The World Cup qualification playoffs will follow on August 13, before the tournament concludes with the grand final in Rabat on Sunday, August 16.
The 2026 edition of the competition will feature a record prize purse of $5.8 million, with the champions set to earn a historic $2 million reward.
Ghana will be aiming to add another chapter to its rich women’s football history by mounting a strong challenge for the title on Moroccan soil.
