The Concerned National Service Personnel Association has given the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) a two-week ultimatum to refund deductions made from the allowances of national service personnel, insisting that the recent suspension of the deductions does not resolve the matter.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, the President of the association, Samuel Ye-largi, said NASPA’s decision to halt the GH¢60 deduction was insufficient, arguing that affected personnel deserve a full refund and an account of how the money collected has been used.
According to him, NASPA must immediately refund the GH¢60 already deducted from service personnel nationwide and publish the total amount collected, together with a detailed financial statement outlining any expenditure.
Mr Ye-largi also questioned the compulsory GH¢100 deduction for the purchase of NASPA cloth, describing the practice as lacking transparency and accountability.
He argued that the fact that the deduction has been implemented over the years does not make it lawful.
The association is demanding answers from NASPA on the legal basis for the mandatory deduction, whether personnel were consulted before the deductions were introduced, the procurement process used to select suppliers, the total value of the contract, the reasons for changing the original supplier, and whether the contract and procurement documents will be made public.
Mr Ye-largi warned that the association would not consider the issue resolved unless NASPA refunds the deducted funds and provides the requested information within the two-week deadline.
“What we are demanding here is the refund of the GH¢100 which was deducted from our allowance to cater for cloth, and we are calling on NASPA to immediately refund the GH¢60 that they deducted from the poor NSS person,” he said.
The association maintained that service personnel deserve greater transparency and accountability in the management of their contributions and called on NASPA to address their concerns without delay.
