The Director of Legal Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Gary Nimako, has accused the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) of abusing its powers, warning that public officials must remember that political power is temporary.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Nimako said he had remained silent for more than a year but felt compelled to speak out over what he described as worrying developments at the anti-graft agency.

“Enough is enough. The NDC will not be in power forever; their time will definitely come. Raymond Archer’s successors have not done what he is doing today, and he should be careful because complaints against him are becoming too frequent,” he said.

According to him, actions taken by public officials today will have lasting consequences for the country’s democratic institutions.

“We must understand that we are building the country for tomorrow. Whatever we do today will affect the next generation,” he stated.

Mr Nimako said he initially chose not to comment on EOCO’s operations but believes the situation has reached a point where concerns must be raised.

He argued that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should not assume it would remain in government indefinitely.

“I kept quiet and didn’t speak out for over a year, but I realise that enough is enough. The brakes must be pulled because we are running a country. The NDC won’t be in government forever. One day they will be in opposition. The power is being abused,” he alleged.

Commenting on the investigation involving Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Mr Nimako said EOCO could have invited him for questioning instead of the approach it adopted.

He maintained that investigators should complete their work, obtain the Attorney-General’s advice on any charges and file the matter in court without unnecessary publicity.

“They could have invited Miracles to their office. They said they had been engaging him for over a year,” he noted.

“After you have built a solid docket with the Attorney-General’s advice on the charges, then you file it in court and commence the trial after serving the defence counsel,” he explained.

Mr Nimako stressed that every criminal case is subject to scrutiny in court and no prosecution automatically guarantees a conviction.

“Whatever you do will be subjected to rigorous cross-examination. It is not a foolproof conviction,” he said.

He urged investigators to conduct their work professionally and discreetly rather than turning investigations into public spectacles.

“That is why I prefer they do their investigations quietly without any fanfare. Why are we doing this to each other? You do me, I do you politics. Public service is not forever,” he added.
