Ghana winger Christopher Bonsu Baah has shared the emotional story behind his rise to professional football, revealing how the death of his mother while he was pursuing his dream in Spain became the most painful moment of his career.

In an interview with The Athletic, the 21-year-old reflected on the sacrifices and emotional challenges he endured after leaving Ghana at a young age in search of a professional contract.

“I would say to my mum, ‘This is difficult for me,’” Bonsu Baah told The Athletic.

“To be alone without any family at such a young age, it’s hard. Earning a contract is very difficult and you end up thinking a lot. If you are not mentally tough, it will affect you every day.”

Despite the hardships, the winger said his mother remained his greatest source of encouragement, constantly reminding him not to give up on his football dream.

“My mum played a big role in helping me,” he said. “Some parents want their kids to focus on school, but she knew how much I wanted to become a footballer. She would tell me, ‘It’s just a matter of time.’”

However, his journey took a heartbreaking turn when he suddenly lost contact with her.

“Suddenly, she was not responding. I wanted to know why, and eventually, I found out she had passed away,” Bonsu Baah recalled.

He said the news was particularly difficult because returning to Ghana for the funeral would have meant losing his opportunity to continue his football journey in Spain due to the conditions attached to his immigration documents.

“It was the most difficult decision I have ever made,” he said. “I thought about what my mum would say. She would have told me to stay in Spain.”

Choosing to remain in Spain became a defining moment in his career, one he believes honoured his mother’s unwavering belief in his potential.

Today, Bonsu Baah continues to pay tribute to her by using her photograph as his Instagram profile picture — a constant reminder of the woman who inspired him to persevere.

“The avatar on my Instagram page is a photograph of my mother,” he said, explaining that her sudden death four years ago transformed his outlook on life.

“Spain had to count for something,” he added.

The winger’s remarkable journey has since been rewarded with a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Although he did not feature in any of the Black Stars’ four matches during the tournament, his inclusion reflected his growing reputation and the resilience that has defined his career.

Bonsu Baah’s story is one of sacrifice, perseverance and determination, highlighting the personal struggles many young African footballers endure in pursuit of their dreams abroad.
