The Twafohene of Sefwi Sayerano, Nana Kwasi Sampa, has given an account of the events that led to the shooting incident that claimed two lives in the community on Tuesday.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Nana Kwasi Sampa said the incident started after some residents accused a provision store owner of selling tramadol.
According to him, some individuals stormed the shop to search for the alleged drugs but found nothing.
He explained that despite not finding any prohibited substance, the man was handcuffed, covered with a black polythene bag and allegedly beaten while being taken to the police station.
“The person was accused of selling tramadol, so they went to his shop to search. After searching, they did not find anything, but they still handcuffed him. They covered his head with a black polythene bag and started beating him,” he said.
Nana Kwasi Sampa said residents questioned why the suspect was being assaulted when he had already been arrested and was being taken to the police station, leading to a confrontation between the youth and the police officers.
“We were wondering why someone who had been arrested and was being taken to the police station had to be beaten. That was what created the confrontation,” he explained.
According to him, the situation escalated when one of the police officers allegedly fired a shot, killing a man who was walking nearby.
“One police officer raised his gun and fired. Unfortunately, the bullet hit a man who was walking somewhere else, and he died,” he said.
He added that the incident angered the youth, leading to a clash between residents and the police, during which another person was shot and killed.
“During the confrontation, the police fired again, and another person was shot dead instantly,” Nana Kwasi Sampa stated.
The chief said residents initially did not know where the officers were from but later received information that they were police officers from Yawso who had been arrested in connection with the incident.
He added that both deceased persons were natives of Sefwi Sayerano.
The incident occurred after a confrontation between residents and a police patrol team during an operation to arrest a suspected drug peddler.
Following the shooting, a police post at Asempaneye Forest was set ablaze by unidentified persons.
The incident has left the Sefwi Sayerano community mourning, with emotional scenes recorded as relatives and residents accompanied the bodies of the two deceased persons to the mortuary at Sefwi Asafo.
