The Central Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the alleged physical assault on a producer of Obaatanpa Radio in Kasoa and the reported temporary closure of the station following a political-related commentary.

The Association also expressed concern over reports suggesting the involvement of the NDC Central Regional Chairman, Richard Asiedu, and the Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Seth Banini, stating that if proven true, such actions would amount to a serious violation of press freedom and Ghana’s democratic principles.

In a statement, the GJA Central Regional Branch stressed that media freedom is non-negotiable, citing Article 162 of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees editorial independence and protects journalists in the discharge of their duties.

The Association described any form of violence against journalists as unacceptable and called on the Ghana Police Service to launch a swift, impartial, and thorough investigation into the incident.

It further urged that anyone found culpable, regardless of political affiliation or status, should face prosecution.

The GJA also called on the leadership of the NDC to publicly condemn the incident, apologise to the victims and the media house, and take disciplinary action against any party officials found responsible.

It further reminded aggrieved individuals and institutions that there are lawful channels for redress, including petitions to the National Media Commission, the GJA, or recourse to the courts, rather than resorting to intimidation or force.

While reaffirming its commitment to defending journalists, the GJA also urged media practitioners to uphold professionalism, fairness, and ethical standards in their work.

The Association expressed solidarity with Obaatanpa Radio and its staff, stating that any attack on a journalist is an attack on press freedom and the public’s right to information, while calling for tolerance and respect for democratic processes.
