Private legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has revealed that a Ghanaian mother who was detained at the Accra International Airport with her baby upon her return from South Africa about a week ago has finally been granted bail.
He made the disclosure in a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, indicating that the woman was granted bail by the High Court.
The lawyer, however, raised concern over Ghana’s bail system, calling for it to be reformed.
“The High Court has granted her bail. The vast majority of people who have no legal representation would not be able to go to a higher court for bail. We need to fix our bail system!” he wrote.
Barker-Vormawor first announced the woman’s arrest on Facebook on Sunday, June 14, explaining that she had become the subject of a bench warrant while she was outside Ghana, allegedly over a money-related dispute that arose before she travelled to South Africa.
According to him, the matter was reported to the police in her absence, leading to the issuance of a bench warrant without her knowledge.
“Our firm — Merton & Everett LLP — is representing a mother with an infant baby who was recently repatriated from South Africa. Apparently, before she left for South Africa, she had a money dispute with someone who reported her to the police. In her absence, a bench warrant was issued for her, unknown to her,” he wrote.
Barker-Vormawor said immigration officials detained the woman when she arrived on a repatriation flight and subsequently handed her over to the authorities.
“When she arrived at the airport with the repatriation flight, she was detained by immigration and arraigned at the Dansoman Circuit Court,” he stated.
An initial bail application filed on her behalf was declined by the court, but on Wednesday, the High Court granted her bail.
