Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has expressed confidence that Ghana can become self-sufficient in poultry production within the next three to four years if ongoing investments in the sector are sustained.

According to him, the establishment of more poultry processing centres will be key to reducing the country’s reliance on imported chicken.

“Within the next three to four years, we should be self-sufficient,” he said.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Opoku noted that the development of at least five strong poultry processing centres across the country could significantly boost local production and help eliminate the need for imports.

“If we get about five strong processing centres, we would stop importing,” he stated.

The Minister stressed the need for Ghanaians to support locally produced poultry and other Ghanaian-made products to drive economic growth and job creation.

“We need to create the demand for our local poultry. Every Ghanaian must understand that for this country to move forward, we all need to be supportive of Ghanaian-owned products,” he said.

Mr. Opoku explained that patronising locally produced goods would help expand businesses, create employment opportunities, and strengthen the national economy.

“If we buy from our own, it will increase employment and boost business, all in order to develop our country,” he added.

The Minister’s remarks come as government continues to roll out interventions under the Feed Ghana Programme and the Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative aimed at increasing poultry production, improving food security, and reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported poultry products.
