Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, Anthony Nukpenu, has dismissed claims by social commentator Kevin Taylor that he would influence the choice of the party’s next flagbearer.
Kevin Taylor had reportedly stated that he would determine who becomes the next leader of the NDC ahead of the 2028 general elections.
But speaking on Adom TV’s morning show Badwam, Mr. Nukpenu described the comments as “loose talk” and urged party members to focus on governance rather than succession politics.
According to him, discussions about who leads the NDC into the 2028 elections are premature when the party still has the responsibility of strengthening its grassroots and governing the country.
“Several people have approached me to know my next political move. One thing I always say is let wisdom lead you in your political ambitions, not the other way,” he said.
Mr. Nukpenu stressed that the foundation of the party must first be strengthened before attention is shifted to future leadership contests.
“If the foundation of the party isn’t strong, it can’t be led. If we haven’t seen that the grassroots is strong, why would I be talking about future matters?” he questioned.
He further criticised what he described as political camps around certain individuals within the party who thrive on succession politics.
“There are politicking mafias around certain individuals that thrive on that,” he stated.
Reacting directly to Kevin Taylor’s remarks, the Greater Accra Regional Organiser said the comments did not deserve serious attention.
“Kevin Taylor’s statement is a no-brainer. We should be focusing on governing the country. Who is he? It’s loose talk,” he said.
Mr. Nukpenu added that he would not engage in what he termed “cheap politics.”
“I will not dwell on those kinds of cheap politics. They don’t deserve attention,” he stressed.
