Legal activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has reacted strongly to reports that a Ghanaian Member of Parliament has been detained in the Netherlands following an investigation linked to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, who represents the Asante Akyem North Constituency in the Ashanti Region, is confirmed to have been arrested upon his arrival at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

He is reportedly under investigation for alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and suspected involvement in romance scam activities, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Reacting to the development, Barker-Vormawor questioned the circumstances surrounding the arrest, suggesting that Ghana’s sovereignty and intelligence systems may have been undermined.

He argued that if the arrest was indeed carried out at the request of US authorities, then Ghana should urgently engage diplomatic channels.

“If the news that the MP was arrested at the request of the US Government is true, I think we need to summon the US envoy immediately,” he stated.

He further raised concerns about whether critical information may have been withheld from Ghanaian intelligence agencies and suggested that Ghanaian officials may have been “trapped” abroad without prior coordination.

Barker-Vormawor stressed that Ghana, as a sovereign nation, deserves respect in international partnerships and questioned whether similar treatment would be applied to US officials under comparable circumstances.

He described the situation as unacceptable if confirmed, calling for accountability and stronger diplomatic engagement between Ghana and its international partners.
