The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has clarified that only three transformers, not eight, have been lost to vandalism and theft within its Tema operational area between 2024 and 2026.
The clarification follows earlier reports suggesting that eight transformers had been stolen over two consecutive quarters, with five allegedly taken in the last quarter of 2025 and three more in the first quarter of 2026.
However, speaking to Accra-based Citi News, the Tema Regional Manager of ECG, Emmanuel Ankomah, stated that the accurate figure over the three-year period is three.
He noted that incidents of transformer theft have significantly reduced compared to previous years, attributing the improvement to measures introduced by the company.
These include physically securing transformers, such as welding them in place, to make it difficult for thieves to remove them.
Mr Ankomah also urged the public to remain vigilant and verify the identity of individuals working on transformers in their communities to ensure they are authorised by ECG.
“We are taking measures to ensure that they can not take the transformers down. there is a massive decline in the theft cases. we have done our best,” he said.
