The Media Response-FFM West Africa II has called on journalists and content creators to refrain from misleading or harmful narratives surrounding free movement and migration within West Africa.
The appeal was made during a one-day training workshop on digital content creation and mini-video blogging focused on migration issues, held in Ho under the theme “Reframing Narratives on Free Movement of Persons and Migration in West Africa.”
The workshop brought together journalists, media practitioners, and mini-video bloggers to build their capacity in ethical and impactful reporting.
Participants were taken through a series of technical sessions covering the ECOWAS Free Movement and Migration Framework, ethical journalism, and migration reporting. The training also featured practical sessions on mobile journalism, digital storytelling, mobile journalism tools, mini-video blogging, and strategies for effective social media distribution and audience engagement.
Speaking in an interview with Odehyeba Owusu Job, the Public Relations Officer for Media Response-FFM West Africa II, Deborah Enam Apetorgbor, explained that the workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of journalists, media practitioners, and public communication officers to report on migration responsibly and accurately.
She emphasized the need to promote accurate, balanced, and human-centred public discourse on migration and free movement across West Africa.
According to her, the initiative places strong emphasis on ethical, evidence-based reporting, while encouraging the use of real-life human stories to shape public understanding.
Ms Apetorgbor further disclosed that the training programme will be decentralized to other border towns across the sub-region to widen its impact and ensure more media professionals are equipped with the necessary skills.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve migration reporting and foster informed discussions on regional mobility within West Africa.
