The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a series of critical infrastructure projects aimed at improving power supply, including the installation of new transformers.

Speaking on Luv FM on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the Public Relations Officer of ECG Ashanti West, Benjamin Obeng Antwi, explained that each of the three operational units in the region intends to install about 300 transformers by the close of 2026.

“We’ve started these projects at Bantama, another at Kpakala in Abuakwa, also Ejisu and Ampabame. Each region intends to install not less than 300 transformers before the year ends,” he said.

The project forms part of a GHS 3.46 billion investment programme, which includes the deployment of 2,500 distribution transformers to ease pressure on the company’s ageing and overloaded network.

Despite the capital investment, many parts of the region continue to experience unreliable power supply, affecting both businesses and households.

From salons to cold rooms, economic activities are being disrupted, impacting daily sales and operations.

Mr. Obeng Antwi also highlighted that nine key projects have been earmarked for implementation, which are expected to significantly improve electricity distribution in the region.

“In the Ashanti Region, we have nine projects. These are critical infrastructure which, when completed, will significantly boost power supply,” he stated.

One of the flagship projects involves the construction of a sub-transmission line from Adoato to Offinso via Barekese. The project will see an upgrade of existing conductors from 120 to 400, along with the replacement of wood tower lines with more durable wood poles.

“We are upgrading that size from 120 to 400 and then from wood tower lines to wood poles. Once that project is done, it will boost power supply to customers within that area,” he explained.

This upgrade is expected to improve electricity supply to Kumasi and its environs, as well as enhance operations at the Barekese Water Treatment Plant, which depends heavily on stable power.

Another project involves the construction of a direct transmission line from Anwomaso to the Airport Substation. Currently, power is routed through Achiase and Fawoade, resulting in inefficiencies.

“Ideally, from Anwomaso to Airport Roundabout is very short, but because we don’t have that line, whenever we want to transfer to the airport, we have to go through Achiase, Fawoade before it comes back. That is very far,” he said.

He added that the new line will also improve connectivity between the Ridge and Anwomaso box supply points, streamlining distribution across Kumasi and surrounding areas, including the Magazine enclave.

Additionally, ECG plans to upgrade conductor sizes over the Kaase and Boankra enclaves from 120 to 400, as part of broader efforts to ensure more reliable and efficient electricity supply across the Ashanti Region.
