The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has disclosed that only GH¢362 million was released to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in 2024 through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
He, however, noted a significant improvement in 2025, with total disbursements increasing to GH¢5 billion across assemblies nationwide.
Speaking at the government’s Accountability Series on Monday, April 20, the Minister outlined a structured quarterly release system introduced to ensure consistency and predictability in funding.
According to him, GH¢790,372,058.40 was disbursed in the first quarter, followed by GH¢1,464,983,309.60 in the second quarter. The third quarter recorded GH¢1,188,921,640.80, while the fourth quarter saw the highest allocation of GH¢1,592,706,391.20.
Mr Ibrahim explained that the improved and timely releases are tied to specific development obligations expected of all MMDAs.
These include the construction of at least two Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, three classroom blocks, and ten boreholes in each district, as well as the completion of ongoing legacy projects.
He added that 25 percent of the Common Fund has been earmarked for the development of 24-hour economy model markets, in line with the government’s broader agenda to boost local economic activity and job creation.
