Residents of Motoka No. 1 in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region have appealed to relevant authorities to provide potable drinking water and electricity, describing the situation as a major setback to their health, education, and overall development.
According to community members, the lack of a reliable water source has compelled women and children to walk long distances to the River Oti for water used for drinking and household chores.
They say the water is often contaminated, exposing families to waterborne diseases and increasing the burden on caregivers.
The daily trek to fetch water, they add, comes with safety risks and consumes valuable time that could be spent on schooling and productive work.
During a visit by Adom News to assess the challenges facing the community, the team encountered difficult terrain on the route to the river, where they were reportedly chased by snakes, highlighting the dangers residents face in their daily search for water.
Residents also expressed concern over the absence of electricity, which they say has affected learning and security.
Without power, children struggle to study at night, and the community remains poorly lit, raising fears about safety after dark.

Some residents explained that schoolchildren frequently arrive late to class because of the time spent searching for water in the morning.
Others noted that at night, children often gather at homes with solar power systems to study, a situation they believe exposes young people to negative social influences and other risks.
Community members say the lack of basic social amenities—particularly water and electricity—continues to undermine efforts to improve livelihoods and attract development projects.
They stressed that access to potable water and electricity would significantly enhance public health, support education, and create opportunities for small businesses and other economic activities.
The residents are therefore calling on the Member of Parliament, the District Chief Executive, relevant state institutions, and non-governmental organisations to urgently come to their aid—especially with the provision of clean drinking water and extension of electricity to Motoka No. 1.
