The Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has urged the judiciary to maintain its independence and steer clear of partisan political entanglements, stressing that its credibility depends on neutrality and public trust.

The appeal was made during a solidarity message at the launch of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Supreme Court of Ghana at the Cedi Conference Centre, University of Ghana.

Speaking on behalf of the Minority Leader, Jerry Ahmed Shaib underscored the judiciary’s longstanding contribution to Ghana’s democratic development and its central role in upholding the rule of law.

He noted that the Supreme Court has, over the years, delivered landmark decisions that have shaped the country’s constitutional order, strengthened governance structures, and advanced civil liberties.

According to him, these rulings have not only deepened democratic practice but also reinforced public confidence in the justice system.

Addressing judges, legal practitioners, and other stakeholders at the event, he cautioned against any attempts to draw the judiciary into political disputes, especially at a time when democratic institutions globally are facing growing pressure.

“We cannot forget the landmark decisions that shaped our democracy. These decisions strengthened the rule of law and reminded us in Ghana that justice is not for the privileged few but the right of all. The court must remain an impartial arbiter of our collective destiny.”

“As we celebrate the present, let us also safeguard our independence. The judiciary must never be dragged into partisan politics. Its strength lies in neutrality and its ability to interpret laws without fear or favour.”
