Residents of Bontibor, a farming community in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, have petitioned the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Joseph Antwi Awal, over concerns about the quality of construction on a bridge linking their area to Salifu-Krom.
The bridge, described by residents as a crucial route for farmers and traders, was washed away about a year ago, with the community attributing the collapse to alleged substandard work by the contractor.
Residents say the bridge’s destruction has disrupted movement, affected livelihoods, and heightened safety risks, especially during the rainy season when waterways can rise rapidly.

In an interview with Adom News, the Amankrado of Bontibor, Okutu Essani, expressed frustration over what he termed poor workmanship and the use of inferior materials. He noted that the community’s concerns are grounded in real consequences, including the tragic death of a 17-year-old returning from the farm when the bridge was swept away by heavy rains.

The Assembly Member, Frank Yeboah, and other community members also questioned the quality of the cement used, alleging that the mix was insufficiently robust to withstand flooding. They called on the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly and relevant engineers to conduct a thorough assessment to prevent future disasters and restore public confidence in the project.

Responding to the concerns, MCE Joseph Antwi Awal met with residents and acknowledged their grievances. He explained that the current bridge construction is temporary, meant to facilitate the contractor’s transport of materials while broader road works continue.
The MCE commended the community for their proactive engagement, describing it as a responsible demonstration of civic involvement.
