The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has carried out screening operations at the Tamale Airport as part of preparations for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, with no narcotics or contraband detected.

In a Facebook post, the Commission said its K9 Unit screened 430 pilgrims and inspected 450 pieces of luggage during the exercise, which was aimed at ensuring a safe and compliant departure process.

The operation forms part of NACOC’s mandate to support travel procedures at key entry and exit points across the country, particularly during high-traffic periods such as the Hajj.

Officials explained that the screening was conducted to detect prohibited substances and other illegal items in line with established travel regulations.

The K9 team carried out thorough checks on luggage belonging to pilgrims preparing to travel to Mecca, with all results coming back negative for narcotic-related substances.

The Hajj pilgrimage, a key religious obligation for Muslims, sees thousands of Ghanaians travel to Saudi Arabia each year, often with significant luggage.

Due to this, security agencies typically intensify checks at airports and border posts to prevent the smuggling of illegal items under the cover of religious travel.

Authorities note that while most pilgrims comply with regulations, there have been isolated cases in the past involving attempts to transport prohibited substances, prompting heightened vigilance.

NACOC has reiterated its commitment to maintaining strict surveillance and safeguarding public safety, adding that its canine detection units will continue to be deployed to support anti-drug operations across the country.
