The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has carried out a major anti-drug operation in Winneba ahead of this year’s Aboakyiri Festival, disrupting what is believed to be a drug distribution network in the Effutu Municipality of the Central Region.

The intelligence-led operation, conducted on Friday, May 1, 2026, targeted known hotspots linked to suspected illicit drug activities as part of efforts to ensure a safe and orderly celebration.

According to NACOC, the exercise was aimed at clamping down on drug trafficking and preventing the misuse of narcotics during the festive period, while also strengthening security in the area.

Teams carried out coordinated swoops at identified flashpoints, leading to the seizure of quantities of suspected narcotics. Several individuals believed to be connected to the activities were also arrested.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the network and identify key financiers behind the alleged operations.

NACOC has reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, assuring residents and visitors of their safety before, during, and after the festival.
