The Ghana Police Service’s Intelligence Directorate has arrested seven individuals over their alleged involvement in a scheme that issued fake electronic traffic violation notices to unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspects have been identified as Martha Quarshie, Peter Ofori McCarthy, Robert Akplehe, Christian Akplehe, Alfred Kofi Totimeh, Michael Edem Amemornu and Prosper Otumfour.

In a statement, the Police said the suspects were arrested from various hideouts in Ada and Winneba following investigations into the fraudulent operation.

According to preliminary findings, the group allegedly developed an online platform used to send fabricated electronic traffic offence notifications to victims. The messages reportedly directed recipients to pay fines through a link provided by the suspects.

Police investigations further revealed that Prosper Otumfour is believed to have registered multiple Telecel Cash SIM cards using the identities of relatives and associates while retaining control of the cards. The SIM cards were allegedly used to receive payments from victims, after which the funds were transferred and shared among members of the group.

During the operation, officers retrieved several items believed to be linked to the scheme.

“These included GH¢10,978 in cash, laptops, hard drives, numerous mobile phones, multiple Telecel SIM cards, bank cards and identification documents,” the statement added.

The Police have reiterated their caution to the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious electronic traffic violation notices for verification and appropriate action. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
