A demonstration organised by pressure group Arise Ghana is currently underway at the United States Embassy in Accra, with protesters calling for the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to face ongoing legal proceedings in Ghana.
The group says the picketing is part of a broader civic campaign aimed at holding public officials accountable and maintaining pressure on authorities to act in the public interest.
Members, dressed in red and black and carrying placards, are urging the US government to cooperate with Ghanaian authorities to ensure the return of the former minister, whom they accuse of evading accountability by remaining abroad.
Arise Ghana emphasized that the protest is not politically motivated but seeks to reinforce citizen oversight of governance and the rule of law.
Police have been deployed around the embassy to maintain order, while traffic in parts of the Cantonments area has slowed due to the picketing.
The protest comes amid ongoing developments regarding Mr Ofori-Atta’s legal situation in the United States.
The former Finance Minister is currently being held at the Caroline Detention Facility following issues linked to his immigration status. He is scheduled to appear before a US court, where proceedings will focus on his custodial status and the processes relating to his potential transfer or release, pending further legal actions.
The court is expected to determine the next steps as authorities consider both his immigration situation and requests tied to Ghana’s interest in having him return to face investigations at home.
